This frothy, whipped coffee drink comes from South Korea and has quickly become a favorite around the world. It’s not just a treat for your taste buds; it’s also a fun, easy recipe to try at home.

What is Dalgona Coffee?

Dalgona Coffee is a whipped coffee drink made with instant coffee, sugar, and hot water. When these ingredients are whipped together, they turn into a light, fluffy foam that’s served over a glass of milk. The result is a coffee drink that’s both creamy and sweet, with a rich, bold flavor.

The name “Dalgona” comes from a Korean candy with a similar texture. The drink became popular during the COVID-19 pandemic as people spent more time at home and looked for new recipes to try. It quickly spread through social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, where people showed off their creations and shared their own tips for making the perfect Dalgona Coffee.

This South Korean coffee drink now enjoys global popularity, after being everywhere on social media during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons boiling water

  • 2 tablespoons instant coffee

  • 2 tablespoons white sugar

  • 1 cup whole milk

Directions

  • Whisk boiling water, instant coffee, and sugar together until coffee is dissolved. Continue to whisk until mixture becomes thick and forms a peak, 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Pour milk into a glass. Pour the frothy coffee on top of the milk.

Notes

  • Instant Coffee is Key: For this recipe, instant coffee works best. Brewed coffee or espresso won’t give you the same frothy texture.
  • Whipping: Using an electric mixer will make the process quicker and easier. If you’re whipping by hand, be prepared for a bit of a workout!
