Origin Oven Baked Pulled Ham
Pulled pork is a popular Southern BBQ dish, and this version uses ham instead of pork. Baking the ham slowly allows it to become tender and flavorful, ideal for shredding and serving in a variety of ways.
What I Love About This Recipe
The slow roasting makes the ham incredibly juicy and tender, while the sweet, tangy sauce infuses every bite. It’s perfect for feeding a crowd or enjoying as leftovers in multiple meals.

kcalIngredients
1 bone-in or boneless ham (about 5–6 lbs)
2 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp brown sugar
1 tbsp smoked paprika
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp ground mustard
1 tsp ground black pepper
½ tsp salt
1 cup barbecue sauce
¼ cup apple cider vinegar
2 tbsp honey
1 tbsp Dijon mustard
Directions
- Preheat oven to 300°F (150°C). Line a roasting pan with aluminum foil.
- In a small bowl, mix together olive oil, brown sugar, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, mustard, pepper, and salt. Rub the mixture all over the ham.
- Place the ham in the prepared roasting pan and cover loosely with foil.
- Bake for 3–4 hours, basting every 45 minutes with its own juices.
- Once the ham reaches an internal temperature of 190°F (88°C) and is fork-tender, remove from the oven and let it rest for 15 minutes.
- While the ham rests, prepare the sauce by mixing barbecue sauce, apple cider vinegar, honey, and Dijon mustard in a saucepan. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5–10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Shred the ham using two forks, pulling it apart into bite-sized pieces.
- Drizzle the sauce over the shredded ham, and toss to coat.
- Serve on buns, in tacos, or with your favorite sides.
Notes
- If you prefer a sweeter sauce, add more honey or brown sugar to taste.
- This pulled ham also works great for meal prep and can be stored in the fridge for up to 5 days.
- For a smoky flavor, add a few drops of liquid smoke to the sauce.
