The French Dip sandwich originated in Los Angeles in the early 20th century, with two restaurants—Philippe the Original and Cole’s—claiming to be the creators. Despite the name, the sandwich isn’t French but gets its name from the French roll it’s served on and the au jus (“with juice”) dipping sauce. It became a popular diner and pub staple, especially in the U.S.

Ingredients

  • 3–4 lbs chuck roast

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • 1 onion, thinly sliced

  • 3 cups beef broth

  • ¼ cup soy sauce

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • ½ tsp dried thyme

  • 1 bay leaf

  • Salt & pepper, to taste

  • 6 hoagie rolls

  • 6 slices provolone or Swiss cheese

Directions

  • Season chuck roast with salt and pepper.
  • In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Sear the roast on all sides until browned.
  • Transfer roast to a slow cooker.
  • Add sliced onions, beef broth, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, thyme, and bay leaf.
  • Cover and cook on low for 6–8 hours or until the beef is fall-apart tender.
  • Remove beef from the slow cooker and shred with forks. Discard any fat.
  • Strain the liquid to serve as au jus (dipping sauce).
  • Toast hoagie rolls, then pile shredded beef and onions on each.
  • Top with cheese and melt under a broiler if desired.
  • Serve hot with a side of au jus for dipping.

Notes

  • Searing the roast adds extra flavor, but you can skip it if short on time.
  • You can use French rolls, ciabatta, or baguettes if hoagies aren’t available.
  • Leftovers keep well and make great next-day sandwiches!
