Lamb Souvlaki

1 Mins read

Lamb Souvlaki is a traditional Greek dish made from marinated lamb pieces that are skewered and grilled to perfection. The dish is juicy, flavorful, and full of aromatic spices. It’s often served with pita bread, tzatziki sauce, and a side of fresh salad or veggies.

Origin Lamb Souvlaki

Souvlaki, a classic Greek street food, is made by grilling small chunks of meat on skewers. The term “Souvlaki” comes from the Greek word “souvla,” meaning skewer. While pork is the most common meat used, lamb is a popular variation due to its tender and flavorful nature. This dish is typically served during Greek festivals and is also a favorite at family gatherings. The lamb souvlaki has become widely enjoyed globally, making its way into many Mediterranean-inspired cuisines.

What I Love About This Recipe

Lamb Souvlaki is one of my favorite dishes because of its perfect balance of savory, smoky, and tangy flavors. The lamb absorbs the rich marinade, becoming juicy and flavorful once grilled. I love serving it with a side of tzatziki sauce, which enhances the lamb’s taste with its creamy and refreshing yogurt-based flavor. It’s an easy dish to make and can be enjoyed as a quick weeknight dinner or a weekend BBQ.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450g) lamb, cut into bite-sized cubes

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil

  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano

  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin

  • ½ teaspoon paprika

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

  • Pita bread, for serving

  • Tzatziki sauce, for dipping

Directions

  • Prepare the marinade: In a bowl, combine olive oil, lemon juice, red wine vinegar, minced garlic, oregano, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  • Marinate the lamb: Add the lamb cubes to the marinade and toss until they are well coated. Cover and refrigerate for 1-2 hours to allow the flavors to blend.
  • Preheat the grill: Heat your grill or grill pan over medium-high heat.
  • Skewer the lamb: Thread the marinated lamb cubes onto skewers.
  • Grill the lamb: Place the skewers on the grill and cook for 10-15 minutes, turning occasionally, until the lamb is cooked to your preferred level of doneness.
  • Serve: Remove the lamb from the skewers and serve it with pita bread, a sprinkle of fresh parsley, and a side of tzatziki sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • If you don’t have skewers, you can also grill the lamb directly on the grill or use a grill pan.
  • For added flavor, you can add vegetables like bell peppers, onions, or tomatoes to the skewers.
  • If you have time, marinate the lamb overnight for a deeper flavor.
